The concept for this Family Reunion starts with our patriarchs, Amos and Lucille Smith Wright (Shown above with their family) and extends to their forebearers, to their siblings, children, grandchildren and beyond to their extended families and friends.
The Wright’s & Beyond Family Reunion will be held July 18 & 19, 2025 in San Diego, CA at the Holiday Inn Bayside. Sunday, July 20th, is a day to gather with small groups of your choice and enjoy various activities throughout San Diego.
The concept for this reunion starts with our patriarchs, Amos and Lucille Smith Wright (Shown above with their family) and extends to their forebearers, to their siblings, children, grandchildren and beyond to our extended families and friends. Our familial connections include such names as: Andrade, Cobb, Cohee, Delafose, Downing, Fontenot, Gibson, Harris, Hayes, Hughes, Johnson, Robinson, Ruffins, Ruiz, Smith, Williams, White, and of course, Wright.
Our heritage is rich. Many of us have roots derived from the Motherland, Africa, with connections to peoples from throughout the North American continent, Europe, and other parts of the world. A significant part of our heritage is poorly documented and is yet to be discovered and explored more deeply. Some of our history touches on the experiences of free and formerly enslaved people of African descent connected to the “Indian Territory” of the United States and the Five Civilized Tribes.
While the Wright’s originated in Opelousas, Louisiana as part of the French-speaking Creole community, the Cohee/Smith’s originated in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). These two families, without knowing one another, independently moved to Mexico in the early to mid-1920’s to buy land and seek opportunities for their families. Amos and Lucille were young when their families arrived in Mexico. They learned Spanish, became part of their new communities, met each other there and eventually married and had their children there. The families, for the most part, remained in Mexico for 2 decades.
Many of our younger generations are unaware of our trilingual abilities, our connection to the Five Civilized Tribes and to Mexico.
Hearing about this, family members are curious and have asked how to find out more. We hope the resources noted here on our website and at the reunion will provide tools and information to help people explore their heritage more thoroughly for themselves.
The reunion will start with a Meet & Greet on the evening of July 18, where we will briefly hear from family members about our amazing ancestor, Chickasaw Freedman, Charles Cohee. The Dinner Dance Festivities will be held the evening of July 19. The event will be even more festive, as we will be celebrating the birthday of our eldest Wright family member, Vivian Wright White, who will be 95 years young on August 8, 2025. What a blessing! For Sunday, July 20, attendees are encouraged to make plans with family and friends to spend additional time on their own enjoying San Diego.
We hope for the very best of outcomes at the Wright’s & Beyond Family Reunion 2025: that we will Meet Each Other, Greet Each Other, Connect to Each Other, and Learn More about Ourselves and Each Other.
We hope to see you there!

Statement of the Chickasaw Freedmen, Setting Forth Their Wrongs, Grievances, Claims and Needs, 1884, pg. 26 – pg.43. This statement was submitted to the Dawes Commission of the U.S. Senate in 1884 by Charles Cohee, Isaac C. Kemp, Geo. W. Hall, and Mack Steveson: the Committee of the Chickasaw Freedmen Association. The purpose was to address the denial of rights and legal status for Chickasaw Freedmen and to seek relief. There are similar statements from other groups of Freedmen associated with the Five Civilized Tribes.
